History of North Nazimabad

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I am a born Nazimabadi(Nazimabad No.1 precisely) but have affection with area North Nazimabad since childhood. My entire Nanihal lives in different blocks of North Nazimabad so my friends. Therefore it’s natural that I liked that area plus it’s so well organized that one can find such orginzation in Islamabad only. I didn’t know much about the area where I have been living for six years now. Offcourse I can’t forget my birthplace that’s Nazimabad No.1 but North Nazimabad has some magic which keeps you in some sort of bonding and never make you feel lonly.

Owais Mughal on ATP has written a classic article about the history of North Nazimabad and its design and architecture. Read here and enjoy. I hope he writes something similar for 7(??) blocks of Nazimabad as well.

Suddle comes all of a sudden.

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Dr. Shoaib Suddle who got fame in mid 90s for his work against MQM’s millitancy is back in town. He has been appointed by Pakistan’s grand dacoit cum politician Asif Ali Zardari. According to sources, Suddle’s sudden appointment is the result of MQM’s recent militancy on 9th April in which laywers burnt live in bar court.

From Dawn:

ISLAMABAD, April 12: The new government made on Saturday changes in the top-level bureaucracy, including the IGP Sindh and Intelligence Bureau director-general.

National Police Bureau’s Director-General Dr Shoaib Suddle was promoted to grade-22 and posted as Inspector-General Sindh, while the Joint Director-General of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Tariq Lodhi, was elevated to the post of the bureau’s DG.

Dr Shoaib Suddle is a senior member of the Police Service of Pakistan and has served at various important positions in the federal and provincial governments. He completed his Masters in Physics and LLB from the University of Punjab. He also obtained a Masters in Criminology from the University of Wales in Britain. Dr Suddle was awarded a doctorate in Criminology in 1988.

Suddle played a main role with guidance of his Boss Naseerullah Babar to clean Karachi with the filth of MQM’s millitancy in 90s which helped to make Karachi a lot better place. Now I hope Karachiites will getrid of Bhatta Khors and mobile snatachers in coming month.

Metroblog’s lame attempt of April fool Prank?

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

I must say that this time Google couldn’t entertain me with their April fool prank. On other hand Sean of Metroblogging HQ tried to have fun with readers of Metroblog Karachi by coming up with a post.

Dear Readers of Karachi Metblogs,

It is with a sorry heart that we at the Metroblogging headquarters in Los Angeles have to announce that Karachi Metblogs will be shutting down for a while while we decide what is the best future for it. While I could certainly try to sugar coat this and blame corporate restructuring, the truth is we are just sick of the constand bitter rivalry within the ranks of the authors which has lead to absolute chaos on the site. Honestly, not a day goes by that one author isn’t e-mail me complaining about this or whining about that, and quite frankly I just don’t care enough to keep putting up with all of it. It’s become a nightmare and it has to end. To solve this issue we are forced to start afresh close the site entirely, step back, and decide what is the best future for this site. As the loyal readers of the site, we feel that your input in valuable and we’d like to get your thoughts on some of the options we are considering. Please take a moment to vote in the poll below and let us know what you think would be the best option for the site at this point. Please know that this wasn’t an easy decision for us, but for our own sanity we had to do something. I’ll be disabling comments because I’ve seen how long comment threads get here and really don’t have the patience to sort through something like that.

Karachi Metroblogs has been a great experience for us at Metblogs and we hope that it shall return to the forefront very soon, please bear with us. Until then KMB Rests in Peace.

It was not enough , our very own doctor saab came up with a seperate post and he even showed a screen shot of login error.

Ironically I am able to post comments in old posts other than first two which is quite interesting that I  am able to post comments on a suspended blog. On other hand reason given by Sean is so lame that it’s hard to believe. Anyways, for me it was not a thrilling stunt. Better luck next time. ;)

Pakistanis in space

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Pakistanis have astonised Americans who witnessed Pakistanis in space. Yes I am not kidding, proof is given below:

Thanks to our local authorities who made it possible and such an easy way. Offcourse we have concrete reason to achieve this task. I am sure if we continue with this pace, sooner we will be able to implement what Iqbal said once in ancient times.

Sitarou Se aagay Jahan aur bhe hain
Abhi Ishq k Imtihan aur bhe hain

I am afraid this struggle for flour might send us next Jahan(World) because we as nation have got tired enough to appear in various Imtihan(tests) conducted by our might government. God bless Pakistan-Ameen.

Karachi ek Shahar thaa…

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Mir Taqi Mir, the famous Urdu poet and resident of Delhi,India couldn’t control his emotons after continous damage and said a classic shair which can’t be forgotten.

Dilli Ek Shahar thaa Alam mey Intikhab
Hum Rehne walay hain Usi Ujray Dayar Kay

Currrent situation of Karachi after Bhutto’s assassination is very severe. Even situation got worst again today after spreading rumors and all banks, shops were ordered to shutdown by unidentified people.

Few Karachiites took the picture of ruined Karachi and after seeing these pictures, I was forced to alter Mir’s shair as:

Karachi Ek Shahar thaa Alam mey Intikhab
Hum Rehne walay hain Usi Ujray Dayar Kay

See below and tell that am I not right?

It’s true that killing of Bhutto is nothing but barbariac act. I am not a pro-PPP person but I equally condemn and feel sad about the incident. I am also sad for those poor Pakistanis who also lost their lives in same accident but they are not being covered at all since they are ordinary Pakistanis rather relative of some Bhutto. There is some magic in name Bhutto that’s why even Benazir’s own son Bilawal zardari changed his naem to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. I think we ordinary people should also add Bhutto as suffix in our names, may we get some attention?

Bhutto’s assassination: Who are beneficiaries?

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

As I was expecting, Pakistani government didn’t disappoint me and just after 24+ hours they announced that assassination of Benazir was performed by whom? yeah by very famous Al-qaeda or talibans. Musharraf when made a public condolence on 27th December night on Benazir’s death and blamed terrorists to do this task, I had figure out that so called government’s investigation team is going to hide real criminals of this case and putting blame on someone else. This doesn’t mean I consider Alqaeda guys saints but govt should not believe that NOT everyone is so naive and dumb that buys whatever govt put forward to justify any act.

As expected(by me), our very own Adil Najam seconds what govt says despite of it’s not being believed by PPP itself. Adil writes about beneficiaries of BB’s death in New York Daily Times:

The only people who could possibly be smiling today are the terrorists who did this. All indications suggest that this is the handiwork of religious extremists who had been threatening such a reprisal and had made a first attempt at Bhutto’s life just a few months back.

Being an old memeber of his own blog and very much aware about his mindset, I was not surprised at all after read his op-ed. As I said somewhere else that blaming Al-qaeda sounds sweet for years but it doesn’t lead to truth.

As I replied in a moderated comment(so far) on his blog about ACTUAL beneficiaries of Benazir’s murder, I listed down few elements which would be feeling very satisfactory after elimination of B.B from Pakistani politics.

1)Musharaf: He was already under pressure and was forced to shake hands with BB which he never wanted. Also Mush knew that presence of Bhutto and her influence which we all witnessed in Karachi on 18th was scary for him since it was sure that Bhutto was not going to re-elect him anyway since Bhutto already experienced Leghari in her past era. While there is no more Bhutto, there is no need of any kind of deal anymore to stay in power plus Musharraf also successfully removed the trump card of US which could play main role in future Pakistani politics.

2)Chudharies: Pretty clear. PPP was the only threat for them. I remember what onc Shujat said in Hamir Mir’s “capital talk” that he could do anything which could HARM benazir and PPP so recent incident is severe shock for PPP.

3)Nawaz Sharif: Benazir and Sharif were rivals so naturally Sharif is quite satisfied now since He also knows that PML-Q is alive due to Musharraf and sooner or later He will be in power with great majority.

4)MQM: MQM always blamed PPP for mid 90s crisis. Also, MQM now contesting outside of Karachi as well including Sind therefore absence of Benazir would naturally benefit them to take more seats in SInd and make alliance with PML-Q and rule again.

5)Fazlur-Rahman: Must be dreaming for future P.M

Benazir Bhutto already blamed Musharraf when she was targeted first time back on 18th October which was not only denied by Benazir and her party but Mehsood as well who said his guys have no interest in killing of Bhutto. Benazir had written a letter to Musharraf after 1st attempt on 18th October in which she mentioned four names who are willing to take her life which includes Chudhary Parvaiz Elahi, Hamid Gul, former ISI chief, Ijaz Shah, head of IB and agencies. In a recent interview on NPR, marc segal, Benazir’s lobbiyst claimed that B.B sent her a message in which she asked him to reveal 5th name(suspecter murderer) if she’s killed and that name was none other than Musharraf.

In the light of all these developments and facts, I personally find no concrete advantage Al-qaeda could gain since they don’t do politics in Pakistan. Also, one should not forget that it’s MUSHARRAF who is in war with talibans and Alqaeda at the moment NOT Benazir so naturally Mehsood & Co must be more busy to assassinate Musharraf than Benazir who was not in power. Even if it was done by Mehsood & CO then it’s quite clear those militants were used by any or one of beneficiaries mentioned above so I don’t buy any lame theory given by Govt to hide the sins.

Yes if one prefers to live in fools’ paradise then could happily follow what’s being said by Govt or in media. Who cares?*shrug*

War of Independence 2007

Monday, November 26th, 2007

The picture you are seeing above is not a digitized version of images from War of Independence which was fought between United India and British Raj in 1857. The picture is about journalists’ protest at Karachi Press Club on 20th November,2007 who were beaten like hell by police officials of Musharraf Raj.

Incase if you are wondering what am I talking about, see below the picture taken from Wikipedia about Indian Rebellion in 1857.

Information Age or Stone age?

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

As many of you might know that Musharraf regime put a ban on Pakistani govt private media after Emergency and blamed them ONE of the core reason of imposed Emergency Plus Martial law. People of Pakistan have been forced to go back to PTV era. As this is curious nature of humans, more you stop them from something, more they resist such bans and try to find out reasons to hide something from them. This was the human nature which was one of the reason of spreading Islam in US despite of several efforts by Bush regime. Musharraf is following same path of ignorance and stupidity and believes that he was doing right while Pakistanis on other hand become more active to watch such news channels which they might not be paying attention much in past. Pakistanis rejected this baised Imposition of media ban by showing their reaction when they started buying Dish Antennas. Mush regime couldn’t bear it either and ordered officials to ban sale of Dish Antenna as well.

The picture you are seeing above was published in today’s Jang in which a Nomad is busy in reading a paper. It shows how an ordinary man is hungry to get informaton. For a moment I found this picture funny but later I realized that I am just making fun of myself. I didn’t find myself different than this nomad who is living in a pipe. I am also living in a shell of Martial law and have been forced to rely on newspapers only. No free media for me anymore. The naked body of this man actually reflecting the naked truth that we have been pushed back in ancient time by using dictator’s Time Machine where people used to lead life in caves. Do you see how careless he is about the internal decor of his home? We are no different than him, have no interest about the filth around us and yet busy in earning money and have food. Just like this nomad who have no issue whether he eats thing in broken pots. Infact this nomad is better than us. Unlike us, he’s living within a single shell while we have been trying to hide ourself behind the several layers of ignorance, arrogance, stpudity and illetracy and yet we feel proud of. I don’t know what making us proud while we 16 billions Pakistanis are not better than this  naked nomad.

Web 2.0 and Karachi’s Minibuses

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Shahrukh asked question about reliability of Web 2.0 on Facebook. What actually he asked was something which was not asked first time neither last time. He asked:

Do you think Web 2.0 bubble will burst pretty soon or it already did?

The first question comes in mind, What is Web 2.0? .Uncle Tim tried to explain the story behind it but that was too complex for a layman. In January I shared what actually is being considered Web 2.0 by IT geeks and laymen. After visiting the link and experiencing several Web 2.0 based systems myself, I came up with conclusion that:

Web 2.0=(Community || Mash-ups || Blogging || RSS Feeds || Big Fonts n Text || Rounded DIVs || Tagging||Wikis||Adsense)

Almost something like that right? You will find all or any of them or many of them in apps which declare themselves Web 2.0 complaint applications.

Now the question arises, what’s the source of Inspiration? what made Web architects to come up with systems which have all mentioned attributes. I personally not sure but when I see such things in web 2.0 based applications it reminds me Karachi’s Minibuses who have all or few of characteristics of Web 2.0 Applications.

The thing which you’re seeing above is actually one of many minibuses in Karachi. A very well-decorated bus. The decorated layer which you are seeing is actually called Chamak Patti in local language which means Flash-strip .These buses have several other salient features as well like high-volume unwanted Music, Supersonic speed, professional drivers who’re so professionals that they consider it insult to apply brakes. So what do I find similarities between Karachi’s minibuses and Web 2.0 or How Web 2.0 terms which I mentioned above are applicable on these mini buses? Follow me!

1) Big Colorful Fonts and Text: One of the main feature of Web 2.0 websites is Big Fonts,Text with lots of Colors. Karachi’s Minibuses have been using this feature for several decades. Writing Route number in Big Big decorated and colorful fonts like you can see U-5 here is not a Web 2.0 invention. Our very own Minibuses Owners and local Minibuses Architects came up with this idea which worked very fine because it was easy to figure out what that bus is all about.

2) Rounded DIVs, ColorFul Layouts and Big buttons: The layer of decoration which is called Chamak Patti is nucleus of a minibus. Just like a Design layout makes a Web site attractive or worst similarly the layer of Chamak Patti plays main role to make a bus attractive or worst looking. Most probably idea of big buttons and colorful layout was taken from these Chamak-Pattis.

3)RSS Feeds/Podcasts: You will ask how the feature of RSS feed exists in a MINIBUS?? Well, let me explain. what’s RSS feed? a medium to send you info continuously no matter you like all of them ,few of them or NONE of them. You have to accept feed entries. By keeping this scenario in mind, we can safely say that continuous and high volume cheap music in minibuses is NO different than unwanted RSS feeds. NO matter how much you despise, you gotta listen the music or cheap and vulgar jokes( FM-W11 fame).

4)Tagging: Now you will guys say that I will be failed to associate Tagging with Minibuses. Sorry to burst your bubble guys but Don’t underestimate our local talent. Tagging is all about.. ummm.. linking something or someone by writing few words or a word so that others could be notified about the content nature. Now how does it work in Buses? well very simple. Ever witnessed stuff written on back of seats? Things like R+S with cupid sign, if this is NOT tagging then what else would you call tagging? The R+S with cupid sign actually telling that R is in love with S providing no further details but it does tell nature of the Content that is Aashiq(Lover). So again, credit goes to our minibuses.

5) Adsense: Now you guys gotta say, Adnan Beytay, You can’t prove it!-Well why not guys? Any Karachiite who claims that he has traveled in minibuses and say he never saw mobile marketing agents then don’t trust him. He’s just lying. In Karachi’s buses, you would see characters who sell some product by repeating some pre-written content which they memorize very properly. Yes you are right, I am talking about those who starts with thing like ,Merey Meharban, Bhaijaan Qadardaan aaj k din mey aap k samney ek nayab cheez laya houn- Then they add customized stuff related to their product and when they reach to stage where they have to reveal price, they end up with thing like ,Kompany ke Mashoori k liye ye sirf x Rupay mey where x=Amount of product.

6)Wikis: Sounds weired? yes I also think so but our minibuses also act like Wikis. If you don’t know what are Wikis? Wikis are web sites where content can be edited by several users regardless of their association with content managers that is, you can add/remove data from certain website and save it. Update info will appear for other visitors. Our minibuses provide this feature by allowing users(passengers) to edit out different instructions written on walls of minibuses by bus owner. For Instance if it’s written, Apni Cheezoun ka Khud Khyal Karain so some passenger will edit it out and make it Apni Cheezoun ka Khud karain or if it’s written Khirki se bahir Sir na Nikalain then some Manchala passenger will make it as Khirki se Bahar na Nikalain and Safar Khamoshi se karain becomes Khamoshi se Karain. In this way our buses provide a great interface to edit out different instructions without any external interference.

7)Social Networking/Communities: Web 2.0 also provide a facility to interact with other users free of cost. You can chat with them, fight with them or whatever you want. All free of cost. Minibuses provide this feature by providing a platform to tussle with conductor, driver and other passengers. You just get involved with them no matter you are necessary or not which is not different than participating on blogs and Social networking systems. :-)

8)Mashups: Mashups are actually systems where more than one type of applications are integrated on a single page. Usually Maps are integrated with other systems to provide a visual information of certain stuff. In Buses, the only way to have Mash-up is making efforts to get into Ladies Compartment. Do keep this thing in mind that this mash-up could create lots of trouble for you :-)

So, that was all about Web 2.0 features in our local minibuses. Next time when you prefer your journey in minibus, do think once about the features provided by minibuses but Use them at your own risk. Don’t complain me if you are unsubscribed(Kicked out) from any of mentioned service due to your stupidity. :-) :-)
