Whoever stands up (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting rewards from his Lord, his heart will not die when the other hearts will die. (Ibn Majah)

Eid is the festival for Muslims.Eid is like gift of Allah(SWT) for those who takes full advantage of the holy month. The night before Eid is called Lailatul Jaziyah. Therefore we should not waste this holy night on roads in shopping or at other places.

Mufti Taqi Usmani’s article about Lailatul Jaizah and Eid can be read here.

Mufti Sohban Mehmood Sb’s lecture about DOs and DON’Ts of Eid can be listened here and here (Ignore the attack message)

  1. I thought that hadith was weak? Check this out:

    http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/12504/night%20before%20eid

And Allah knows best. Obviously technically it is still a night of ramadan so its good to do ibaadah in it, but i dont know about that specific hadith.

  2. Salamalikum

The layat al-Jaazah hadith has two sanad and one is fabricated and the other is very weak as the muhaditheen explain. The respected Mufti Taqi Uthmani is in the error to think this hadith narrated in ibn Majah has a good enough chain to consider it an evidence. This (it being bidat and not an act of sunnah) is also the opinion of the majority.

  3. Let me also say this, it actually comes down to how seriously you take weak ahadeeth. Mufti Taqi Uthmani comes from a school of thought that says it’s ok to use weak ahadith, but not fabricated ones, in cases of fadhaail (fazaail) but not in cases of ahkamaat/obligations.

The other more conservative school says that weak ahadith cannot be used as evidence alone even in cases of fadhaail.

  4. the issue of weak/strong hadiths always baffle me. I wonder by saying a hadith a “weak” implies that it’s against shariah or a plain lie against Muhammad(saw). I think there’s a clear difference between a fake hadith and a weak hadith(the chain of narration is not authentic).

Here comes a question, the Prophet(saw) will not say a hadith which would be against Shariah, so if someone quotes a “hadith” which appear against shariah and it’s stated as “Saheeh”, do we have to follow this? Offcourse not.

The point is which not only deobandi school of thought but many others also say that if a hadith(say a weak one) is not contradicting the basics of Islam then it’s not harmful to follow it. For instance if there is a weak hadith which says that any Fard prayer could be skipped on some “exceptional cases” then such hadith should be rejected because Muhammad(saw) will never say something like this. Therefore if a hadith happen to appear weak but it’s not ruining iman or basics of Shariah then it’s not harmful at all. and Mind you, it’s not Innovation(Bidat) either. Rest, Allah knows the best.

    p.s:

  5. Salamalaikum

Ahadith that are not ’saheeh’ are considered either hasan (good), da’eef (weak), da’eef jiddan (very weak) and mawdoo’ (fabricated). There might be some other sub-categories but as far as I know these are the main.

The sayings of Prophet (saw) are part of the shariah so there can’t be a saheeh hadith that can contradict Shariah. What you might have meant was that a hadith that contradicts Qur’an or some other saheeh hadith of the Prophet (saw). Of course, any authentic hadith doesn’t contraditc Qur’an and if a hadith seems to contradict an older hadith of the Prophet so either there is reason to combine the two ahadith or the newer hadith cancels the older one. Meaning, the prophet allowed something earlier and then forabde it later. The scholars know what ahadith are mansookh.

When I said ’school of thought’ I didn’t mean Deobandi. This opinion that weak ahadith in terms of fadhaail can be used is an old one (more than thousand years I would say). Some scholars say it’s ok while others say no, there is no need to follow weak hadith because when something is weak then its credibility is doubted. So, why act upon it? There is enough in the authentic ahadith and Qur’an for us to boost our imaan. Fabricated (mawdoo’) hadith are outright forgeries.

What is important to note is to see what shahabah and the generation following them did. Usually what I’ve seen that if a hadith is weak the sahabah have not been known to do the actions listed in that hadith. And, this is a huge sign as to what we should do. And, this hadith is not only weak it’s “da’eef jiddan” (very weak). Still, I’m no scholar and you have to follow the scholars you sincerely trust while fearing Allah. So, if you trust Mufti Taqi Uthmani more than the scholar mentioned in the link provided by PD then you’ll have to take this issue up with Taqi Uthmani.
