The Yahoo! I know does not exist anymore

Yes Yahoo! is dead now. Finally Microsoft got succeeded to swallow the one of the oldest Internet search engines after several attempts. Yahoo! tried it’s best to get away from Microsoft but finally given up and got agreed to give up its core strength that is search tools for sake of $1billion something along with Flickr image database. As it was mentioned on Tech Crunch, Yahoo! got binged.

1996 was the year when I was the 1st year engineering student. Internet was quite new in Pakistan and ISPs like digicom and PTCL only existed in those days. Since it was quite expensive(Rs.90+/hr)[Can  you imagine it in days of DSL when one can have it @Rs.400!!!] so only elite class could afford it. Internet was setup in my varsity and we were alloted time in computer labs to browse Internet. One of the two things I found after few sessions was Yahoo!, the other was mirc.

Just like twitter, facebook and other social stuff are popular time wastage sources for Pakistanis similarly Yahoo! and Irc were only sources to waste time. I did not know what is actually Yahoo! and what is a search engine. All I knew that if I had to search something, go to Yahoo!. The other thing I learnt later was about download.com to download softwares.

Yahoo! in 1997 (Internet Archive)

You can see Yahoo!’s ancient versions here and here . Yes! we were quite satisfied with this weird interface and search results because there was no Google at that time. Whether you search for your assignments or for your favorite recipie, Yahoo! was there. It’s not true that Yahoo! was the only search engine at that time. Stuff like Lycos and altavista were there too but they did not get much attention in presence of Yahoo!.

When Google came it changed the entire concept of searching. Yahoo! and others did not pay much attention and they did not take both Page Rank  and searching tools seriously and  later got doomed.

Yesterday was the last day of Yahoo! as search engine. Now Yahoo! is dependent on Microsoft’s Bing. There is no Yahoo! anymore. Good Bye Yahoo! Thanks for being a helpful mate in my early Internet days.

  1. What about yahoo mail? Is that gone too, or what?

  2. I don’t really understand it. The yahoo search page is still opening and conducting search as well.

  3. Sooner Microsoft’s search engine (Bing) will be integrated with Yahoo! Interface and results will appear from BIng(but with different layout) rather than from Yahoo! Microsoft in return will be using Yahoo’s Ad System for its users.

No, only Yahoo Search was sold out not other things.

  4. Don’t panic, no one is using Yahoo! search around me and no one is using “Bing is not Google” search engine.

  5. Right. We all use google anyways…
