Kishore Kumar and Me
This post might be unexpected and unusual for the readers who have been reading me for many months but not for THOSE who are with me since beginning because I often discussed things about past. This post is also an attempt to open the door of my past. This is the first time I am writing about my hot favorite singer as well as friend Kishore Kumar or Kishore da and prolly last time as well because I will not have anything further to discuss about him. Someone might get surprised what’s so special to discuss him after 1 and half years of blogging? well, I just came to know that tomorrow that is 4rth August is his Birth day so I think it’s right time to share associated memories with you. It’s a loong journey, from Kishore to Ka’aba with no relation with each other, prolly there is one? anyway, read on.
I don’t remember when did I hear Kishore Kumar first time because I had been listening him since childhood. My mamoo used to hear him. Dad used to listen old songs on All India Radio in the morning after BBC news and in night so I don’t remember which song exactly I like. I remember first few songs I heard by him were “Dekha Ek Khuwab tu Ye silsilay Huway”,”LArki Ya Ya Shola” both from Silsila. Actually almost every song of that Movie was cool. Then I remember that my other uncle used to hear Chingari Koi Bharkay and few more.
First time I started listening him seriously when I was in 9th grade and my childhood frined who was fan of kishore and other old singers, gave me a cassette of Kumar Sanu who was very new at that time(91/92) and used to copy kishore. I got the cassette from him and I LISTENED kishore’s song first time . Songs like Ghungroo ki tarha , Merey Naina Sawan Bhado, were not new for my ears but I had never paid attention to them.
I really started liking the songs by him. Infact I started listening his solo or sad songs first. Chingari Koi Bharkey was really a classic song, a very different song. I also liked other said songs like “Ghungroo k tarha” or “Koi Hamdam na raha” etc. The reason I was liking more such songs because I thought I was getting mature or maybe I was inclined towards some lady?
As much as I explored songs of Kishore, I found out that I just don’t like him due to his sad songs but also songs which were filled with Advice(Naseehat). How can I ignore the classic song Zindagi ka Safar from movie Safar(Journay)? The song which was penned by Indevar was equally sung well by Kishore. Let me tell you that I was never social in life, despite of I have a big friend circle but since I am lazy enough to party around. The time I started Kishore was my school age so also busy in school work so was not used to go outside much other than playing street cricket with pals. And as I said in other post that I was very fond of music so the interest was developed after listening Kishore seriously. So being a not-so-social person, songs of Kishore and his voice had become my friend. His songs had become like oxygen and I remember I used to listen him late night in dark room, enjoying full moon light. Listening songs like Is Morh se Jatey Hain from Aandhi and Wo Shaam Kuch Ajeeb thee from Khamoshi and Merey Deewanay pan ki dawa nahin in late night used to give a different taste to me. In early 90s, there was no Internet neither I had any computer. Since I was summer vacations so I never missed any program of All India Radio and Aakash Vani radio channel where they used to play old song. Acha in early 90s, I had no idea about composer, who penned the song or other thing, all I knew it was sung by Kishore. Infact after listening songs like O Majhi Re!, Ye Laal Rang, Musafir houn Yaroun, i never bothered to find out who else behind such creation because Kishore always took the lead. Kishore also had great quality of Yoodling. Though he did yoodling in many songs but song Mey houn Jhumroo was imaginary awesome. The other song in which he did great Yoodling was Tum Bin Jaoun Kahan. Later when R.D.Burman and Gulzar also joined my favorite list then I specially tried to find songs in which these guys worked together. Songs like Teray Bina Zindagi se Shikwa from Aandhi and Janay Kia Soch kar Nai Guzra from Kinaara were my top favorite songs by these three.
He was not just copied by Indians but several famous Pakistani singers tried to copy him and sung his songs in their career. Singers like Alamgir, Sheikhi ,Sajjad Ali were great fans of Kishore and sung his famous song of that time.
I could write on and on but I have to end it somewhere. Kishore Kumar was not only favorite of my generation[Late 70s] but also young kids of late 80s and 90s liked him as well.
Though I liked almost most of his songs. I also claimed I have not listen all 35,000 songs sung by him but whatever I listen by him, I did like few of them more than others. This is not some Top-nth List so it doesn’t mean song on 1st position is my MOST HOT favorite song.
- Is Morh se Jatey Hain(Duet with Lata)
- Yeh Laal Rang Kab mujhe Chorey ga
- Yeh Merey Bandhey Haath
- Koi Hamdam Na Raha
- Ye Jo Mohabbat Hay

The list could go on and on but these were few which I remember used to list most of the time
That’s all folks! I think many regular readers who know me as a blogger who write more about religion and politics and recently ranted about Music is not part of Islam , would consider me a hypocrite. I thought twice before making this post that whether I should have done this or not or what others think about mine? but then I just refused my own thought because first, I write for myself , second , why do I pretend? what I am today was not in past. I want that others know my past and what I was fond of in past. I hope I wouldn’t have disappointed my readers, if I have then I am sorry but my whole purpose of this post was to say something about old friend whose 78th Birthday is being celebrated today by his fans. I WAS one of Kishore’s fan.

Asalam o alekum,
I guess this post shows.. that even if you love something or someone so dearly.. it is possible to leave them/ it….even if music was your life and blood.. IT IS POSSIBLE to leave it for the sake of Allah and Rasool Allah and for achieving success in the hereafter. If one person can do it.. so can others..

Zain,my friend, yes all those who were infidels before Islam and then become great icons of Islam would be hypocrite foryou.
You might like to lookup meaning of hypocrisy in dictionary. Hypocrisy was, if I kept listening it and other hand kept disliking it as well. Anyways, thanks for showing your class by using F* word.

@Dee: I had a very good collection of old songs. After liking Kishore at the age of 14, I built up a music library in which then I collected old Indian songs of different artists. I was not only big fan of kishore but also RD Burman ,Gulzar and Bhupinder as well. I used to listen Zakir Hussain’s tabla as well as Ravi Shankar’s work..and a lot more. Though I removed all digital stuff from my hard disk but i still have CDs. If you need, i can give them to you:)
@Dee and Jevria: well that was not preplanned. I think liking or disliking something could be never preplanned. Actually, I hadn’t even planned to disliking music even last year but one day I was offering Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid near my office. I was offering Sunnat namaz then all of sudden a mobile rang with a movie song tone. At that time I hated music a lot that I listen such things which even disturb me?
Second thing which helped further was Recitation of Quran during Maghrib prayer in Masjid Nabvi(SAW), that recitation was so sweet so different that I was feeling Quran inside, I wished that recitation never ends. Bus that was the point that I came back Pakistan and removed all songs from my hard disk. I don’t say I am 100% successful. Sometimes shaitan’s magic work but I try my best not to hear. Atleast I removed songs from my computer.

JazakAllahu khairan for your intentions. I often find a trend in your writings about you “exposing” your past in order to not “pretend”. This is a praiseworthy intention and speak of your high taqwa, inshaAllah, but according to scholars this is not a recommended act. If Allah subhan wa taala has covered your sins, then there is no need for you to expose them because Allah knows what’s best for us. And, if Allah has convered your sins, scholars say you should cover (and repent from) sins even if they are serious, like sins that have hadd punishments. Of course, if you stole something this doesn’t mean you should keep the things; rather, it means you should return them but don’t expose yourself as the thief unless somebody is taking a fall for you. Allahu Alam
Now, what would be wrong would be for you to say or imply that you were religious in the past. But, as long as you don’t intentionally try to convey such a message, there is no need for you to announce to others what you were in the past. If you are doing one-to-one tabligh or dawah and you find that you need to tell “your story” in order to have an affect on that person, so that is fine (Allahu A’lam). But, I don’t think generally one needs to announce to masses his/her past. Please do note that I mentioned what scholars said about this not being recommended…so, I’m not saying that what you did was wrong or harmful or haram.
This is my understanding from whatever my knowledge is. If there is something wrong, so then it is my right that you correct me if you know. This is not a highly major issue, and it seems like you explaining your past inspire people, but I thought you should know what’s the correct opinion on this issue.
wasalamu alikum

Tried to comment earlier but net gave up on me.
We all have pasts and it shows real courage when someone shares his past with world wide web.
By the way, you asked for trouble when you wrote:
“I think many regular readers who know me as a blogger who write more about religion and politics and recently ranted about Music is not part of Islam , would consider me a hypocrite. “

The voice of Kishore Kumar is divine, and listening to him would be equal to attaining salvation my dear friend. So don’t even think of hypocrisy even once. Just enjoy your moments of salvation like millions do all over the globe. It’s a wonderful article you wrote and do keep on the great work.
