MSN Quran-Quran Reference on MSN Messenger
Ok, this is yet another hobby projects after Fetch da Feed and AJAX based Contact form.
I came across a site host MSN bot and provides APIs in different languages so I thought to give it a try for a test project so that it could be used for some project in future.
Many of readers would have noticed that I refer Quranic verses in different posts and search Quranic website like MSA Compendium is not always user friendly for searching particular verse or keyword. A person like me who is online most of the time on MSN/GTALK/Yahoo most of the time will always feel comfortable to just send a message to an ID rather browse for keyword. So I came up with idea of bringing Quran on MSN. I got whole Quran in XML format from ArabEyes.
Farooq Ali sent me english translations of Yusuf Ali,Pickthall and Shakir and orignal ARabic quran. Thanks mate. Right now only Yusuf Ali’s translation has been provided and currenly Arabic version is not provided due to some technical limitation.
In order to use this system, all you need to add MSN ID quraanmajeed@gmail.com in your MSN. This is a Passport ID so @gmail.com is acceptable for MSN. After adding , simply send a command/message help to understand how does it work. I am attaching screenshots of my MSN client. Note that you can use that this system works fine Gaim based client like Meebo as well.
When you send ‘help’
Searching Keyword
Search a particular verse
It also validates correct verse format and number. For instance , there is no 45th verse in Chapter 114.
The project is in Beta stage and I am definately willing to enhance and Improve it. I am open for all suggestions and you can always email to the address quraanmajeed@gmailDotCom. Replace Dot with respective symbol. I am looking your feedback for following things.
-Name of the Bot
-Some Good quality Quran picture in PNG format but very small
The features need to be implemented are:
-Arabic version.
-Adding more English translations.
-Enhance search criteria and range e.g: search verse 7 to 9 of chapter 2 by writing quran 2:7-9 en
- List of All chapters in English/Arabic.
Let me know if you want to see something else. It’s an Eid gift for all muslims around the world who need to refer Quran on daily basis and as many readers of my blog aware that I am all trying my best to spread Allah’s word in this world. Spread it if you like it. Do remember its a BETA software so don’t worry if it ever goes offline for upgradation or routine check.
Update: I have released the source code of the MSN Quran and have revealed technical details. For details visit my ‘technical blog’ ![]()
Update#2:
Well, I am having hosting issue for this bot on the machine. The bot which is actually a Windows NT service running on a dedicated server of my friend in US. He’s now planning to move on to shared hosting due to some financial issue. $250/month was not being easy target for him. In shared hosting, there are chances that I will not be allowed to run a NT service on machine and ultimately I would have to shutdown this service permenantly or would rewrite either in Java or C++ so that I could host on Linux machine. So my question for anyone who’s reading this and a subcriber can host this bot on his/her machine then kindly contact me at quraanmajeedATgmail.com; replace At with @ .
Requurments are:
1) .Net framework 1.1[ freely available]
2) Mysql 4/5 [freely available]
3)A machine which is online all the time and on some high broadband service. there are aroun 300 messages/day are send to this bot.
Many emailed me to help me when in need so I think it’s time that some of IT geek or anyone who has a personal windows server online contact me to resolve this matter. I will be waiting for your response

lady ash, actually i tried to access your blog via your profile but i was unable to open it.
@Afzal: thanks for liking, right now I am having issues even to run it in current form-been talking with few guys to host it. Urdu idea is nice but I dont even have urdu authentic translation at the moment. Voice otpion is way beyond my current plan. I dont know why you called me a preacher. I am doing what was ordered to every Muslim by God in Quran.

Couldn’t you do this with a web service? That would kill the need for MySQL, and allow you to hit the XML file with XPATH querys. I don’t know how fast it would be, but it would require less of a powerhouse server. How big is the Quran in XML? Can you send it to me?
Mansoor, I agree, only the Arabic is true to form, but some people don’t speak Arabic, and those people should be able to access the word without learning a foreign language. It is my understanding that the word of Allah is for the benefit of all humanity, not only for the Arabic-speaking people. As long as the English words are a translation and not an interpretation (as is the case with many Christian Bible versions), then it should be ok.

Jasmine I didn’t make it a web service because I didn’t want to make it a public service.
Reason for not using XML becuase I had understanding that it would eats lots of memory as I would have to load in memory first.
The XMLized quran is available on arabeyes.org, I do have XML quran but I don’t know how to send you. I can’ta ccess your blog because you are using Beta Blogger which is slow and not accessible from Pakistan. Drop me a mail to my address given in profile and I would send you.
